Training Model

Part 1

Blended learning is a key factor to being successful at all three stages of the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) training process. The training stages are linked together as your learning at Part 1 and Part 2, you put into practice at Part 3.

Part 1, Combining literature, (Highway Code, Driving Essential Skills, Driving Instructors Handbook) with course content and one of the various ADI Part 1 Training Apps that are available. You can make yourself familiar will all aspects relating to driving theory and teaching skills. I would recommend is Trainee ADI UK Theory Test App by Imagitech Ltd. They also do a Hazard Perception App and is cheaper to buy as a bundle.

I would also recommend you purchase the additional Theory Apps for Motorcycles, Buses and HGVs. Although these vehicles are not what our training is focused on, it provides a deeper level of learning and understanding to have a perspective from these other vehicle type users.

You work your way through these aspects in your own time and whenever you recognise that you have a suitable knowledge level you can book and undertake the Part 1 Test.

You must pass both the Theory and the Hazard Perception elements of the Test. Only on successful completion of the Part 1 Test can you then book the Part 2 Test.

Part 2

This is based on 10 hours of in-car driver training on a 1-1 basis. Generally, 5 x 2hr sessions, but as always this can be adapted to suit each individual’s needs. The candidate is required to reflect honestly on their own standard of driving to identify any bad habits and aspects which they recognise will need refreshing or development. Your initial Part 2 Training Session will be an assessment drive so that together we can identify and develop an improvement skills plan to meet the Standard required for the Extended Test and prepare you to demonstrate these skills at an enhanced level. Again, only on successful completion of your Part 2 Test you can then apply to undertake the Part 3 Test.

Part 3

This is where things become more challenging for individuals. As a driver, Part 1 and Part 2 are familiar, you are required to improve your knowledge and refresh your skills to a higher standard. Part 3 is usually the new bit as you may not have any previous teaching / instructing / coaching experience. You do not need or require having any of this previous experience, but this is the “new” aspect.

During the Part 3 Test a DVSA Examiner undertakes an Assessment of you delivering a real-life lesson with a learner driver in your car.  This is undertaken in your work environment on a Route and Lesson subject of your choice.

The main challenge we have with the Part 3 arrangements  is “how do we get the PDI experience in teaching / instructing / coaching real learners? We have different options.

Initially we dedicate 10 hours (depending on the individual) on understanding how you keep your car, the driver and everyone else around you safe. This covers things like verbal or practical intervention by means of using the dual controls for example, also how to give clear and timely directions and use of the correct terminology. We look at  identifying errors in driving procedure, being able to develop a plan of action to correct these errors by involving the learner in this process. Once you have a good grasp of these fundamental foundational skills, we plan together on how to further develop your skills and what options are available to start you teaching a Learner Driver.

An effective option is to apply for a Trainee Licence, referred to as a “PDI or Pink Badge Holder”.  A Trainee Licence is valid for 6 months* and allows you to earn and gain experience of teaching real life learner drivers when training as a Driving Instructor.  This is a most effective way to build your experience and to develop the essential skills required to successfully complete the Assessment undertaken at the Part 3 Test. However, it is not always a feasible option as individuals may have other work commitments.

If a Trainee Licence is not an option to you there is the ability to teach Learner Drivers  for free and commonly this can be a relative, friend or neighbour. This allows you to build on the experience of dealing with real Learner Drivers and the benefit to them is it is on a no cost basis.  Clearly the legal use of the car, in terms of Licence and Insurance on the road, must apply. This vital teaching experience is essential for successfully completing the Part 3 Test as the core elements of the Assessment need to be evidenced by you.

Which ever options you choose there will always be some financial outlay to consider and each individual will go about things differently to suit their needs. Further discussions can be had nearer the time to help you find the right option for you.

In either option, I undertake specific training with you in the format of supervising you and assessing Driving Lessons that you have with your Learners. Together we undertake a process of continuous periodic assessment, reflect on the Lessons that I observe, identify strengths and weakness, and develop plans to improve aspects of your lesson technique for the next time.

The total amount of in-car training at Part 3 will differ greatly for each individual, but as an average we will work together for 20 hours, supplemented with your own personal study time.  However, this could be less or more depending on each individual.
